Riley Newman was born and raised on Whidbey Island, Washington from very supportive parents, Mike and Pam Newman. Riley grew up in the middle of 6 siblings (5 sisters and 1 brother). He grew up and loved playing baseball, soccer, basketball, and tennis. He especially loved basketball and tennis and like his older sister, Lindsey; played tennis at a Division I school in Seattle. Riley was introduced to pickleball in the summer of 2017 by basketball referee and Selkirk player, Mark Cook. Because Riley and Lindsey both played very high-level tennis, picking up a pickleball paddle and learning the strategy wasn’t too difficult. The Newman’s entered into their first 5.0 tournament and won the mixed doubles bracket! Riley has been hooked on pickleball ever since and absolutely loves all of the wonderful people he has meet because of it. Riley lives in Phoenix, Arizona and referee’s college basketball. Riley plays with the Amped Epic paddle and loves the extended handle which allows him to hit his two handed backhand, also the power from the baseline with the touch from the kitchen line. His favorite Pickleball memory came in his first US Open tournament (2018) where Lindsey and him progressed so far in the tourney that they played on center court in the mix open quarterfinals. “The fans were so engaged and felt the awesome energy throughout the whole match.”
